  • $4000, ten-week competitive research grant in addition to a $300 reimbursement for research related expenses.

  • Funded a portion of the project The Effects of Earlier School Start Times on Cognition and Sleep in Children Ages 7-10. Scored previously collected cognitive assessments and questionnaires. Prepared, manipulated, and managed SPSS database. Analyzed select variables and interpreted preliminary findings to ensure groups were well matched on all variables. Reviewed and synthesized relevant literature in preparation for thesis writing. Oral presentation of basic findings was given at a symposium at the conclusion of the program.

  • Study Coordinator for Cognitive Changes in Older Adults with Epilepsy. Examining the effects of epilepsy and its treatments on cognition and mood in adults 55 and older as compared to their peers without epilepsy. Screening, recruiting, and obtaining consent of over 50 participants. Administering and scoring neuropsychological assessments and questionnaires. Conducting chart reviews for epilepsy participants identifying seizure type, etiology, anti-epileptic drug regimen history, overall medical history, and analyzing previous MRI and EEG findings, and reviewing these findings with Dr. Blum, an Epileptologist. Responsible for maintaining up-to-date IRB documentation (continuing reviews, revision to protocol, etc.). Creating and managing the REDCap database.

  • Study Coordinator for Use of the Telephone-Administered Minnesota Cognitive Acuity Screen (MCAS) to Detect Mild Cognitive Impairment. Examining the utility of a telephone assessment longitudinally as a tool to detect MCI and predict conversion to dementia. Administering face-to-face neuropsychological assessments and questionnaires in an office setting and by telephone.  Supervising and training undergraduate volunteers on the study protocol, procedures, and administration instructions for assessments, through verbal and role-playing demonstrations. Maintain Microsoft Access database.

  • Research Assistant for the NIH-funded R01 study, Psychosocial Telephone Intervention for Dementia Caregivers. Examining the effects of a telephone support intervention on burden and self-efficacy in 250 caregivers of persons diagnosed with mild to moderate dementia. Administered satisfaction assessment to caregivers at their completion of the study. Assisted with data entry and verification as well as clean up and consolidation in both Microsoft Access and SPSS in preparation for analysis.

  •  Memory Disorders Center Consensus Conference. Attend weekly case presentation meetings with Neuropsychologists and Neurologists to determine a consensus diagnosis for patients with possible memory deficits after evaluation of neuropsychological testing, imagining, and neurologic exam.

  •  Brown University Neurology Grand Rounds. Attend weekly grand rounds, which include case presentations and guest lectures on a variety of topics in Neurology, followed by discussion.

  • Rhode Island Hospital Comprehensive Epilepsy Center Conference. Attend bi-weekly conference presentations of epilepsy cases that are potential brain surgery candidates. Epileptologists, medical residents, neuropsychologists, and Neurosurgeons attend this conference. Imaging, EEG recordings, seizure type and description, medical and psychiatric history, and neuropsychological testing are used to assess surgical candidacy.

  • Support an Epileptologist during patient visits and discuss the patient’s epilepsy presentation and current treatments. In addition to observing in the EEG lab, where EEGs are read for all of Rhode Island Hospital, was explained the overall structure and premise behind the recordings.

  • Participated in the administration of several Wada tests, used to lateralize language and assess which hemisphere is dominant for memory, in patients with epilepsy being considered for temporal lobe resection. Then a discussion of the case and findings followed the assessment.

  • Assisted in a research study collaborating with Head Start programs to provide feedback on how to create the most suitable learning environment possible for young children. Intervention strategies were created to help teachers better track the individual developmental progress of the children in their classrooms.

  • Observed research assistants administer questionnaires during home visits with parents. Performed data entry and verification in SPSS, in addition to researching information for the monthly parent newsletter and completing various office duties for research assistants and other researchers.

  • Examined the effects of an earlier school start time on sleep, cognition, and behavior in elementary school students from second to third grade. 

  • Recruited and gained parental consent and child assent as well as managed logistics and scheduling. Administered cognitive assessments, parental questionnaires, fit and explained two types of Actigraphy devices to children and parents. Utilized the Actiwatch readers and computer software to change batteries, retrieve data, and configure the watches. Trained new research assistants on protocols and test administration. Analyzed and interpreted data, which was developed into various poster presentations, honors thesis, and a first-author undergraduate publication.
